Amy has always loved science fiction—books, movies, shows, and games. She was born in San Diego, California, and moved with her family to Vancouver, Washington, at the age of seven. After devouring some of the classics like Dune and Ender's Game in her tween years, she began writing science fiction and fantasy short stories.

In the ensuing years, Amy attended the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics, where she continued to study creative writing, visual art and played viola in the school orchestra. During this time, she began the very early sketches of what would eventually evolve into the Cadicle series.

Amy received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Portland State University, and also pursued minors in Professional Writing and Business Administration. After graduating, she moved to Portland, Oregon, and began working in business development for an energy efficiency consulting firm. Over the next several years, she primarily wrote proposals to prospective utility clients and managed the proposal development process. She then transitioned from energy efficiency into the architectural, engineering and planning industry. However, she eventually succumbed to the writing bug.

Now a full-time author, Amy currently lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband. When she's not writing, she enjoys travel, wine tasting, binge-watching TV series, and playing epic strategy board games.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Kali’s next test may be her last.

The only thing Kali Wietris wants is the chance to make a difference. But it takes more than desire to be accepted into the elite telekinetic branch of the Taran military.

When a woman is abducted, Kali is given the dangerous assignment to test her suitability to move from trainee to fully-fledged Agent. Kali fears that her superiors don’t trust her, and she must prove that she has what it takes to overcome the trauma of her past.

With time running out for the captive, Kali must risk her life to prove herself and become the Agent she wants to be.

PLOT SYNOPSIS - Shadow Behind the Stars (Shadowed Space Book 1)

Kali Wietris is a TSS Junior Agent whose final step before graduation is to pass an internship in the field. TSS internships are designed to test future Agents’ psychological and emotional weaknesses, so Kali’s focuses on her PTSD triggers related to her time as a captive of the former governing Priesthood, where she was forced to carry a cloned baby to term.

At first, Kali thinks her internship assignment is a joke: investigate a band who travels around playing blues music from Earth, an oddity in the Taran Empire. However, it is actually a critical mission, as a woman, Darlia, has just been kidnapped, and Kali needs to find her before she’s harmed.

Agent Andy Renteria is assigned as Kali’s proctor for the exam, who also fills the role of her investigation partner. He must walk the delicate line between letting Kali take the lead while also making sure the time-sensitive investigation is conducted properly.

The investigation takes Kali and Andy to a planet where the band is set to perform, though their identity as TSS Agents is kept secret. A run-in with the local authorities lands Kali in a jail holding cell, where she gets to know Mika, the band’s manager.

Unbeknownst to Kali, Mika finds women with latent telekinetic ability potential and marks them for his shadowy associate, Tregaren, to abduct. He’s a gifted engineer and pilot, using the band for cover as he travels around to covertly do Tregaren’s bidding. Mika also possesses telekinetic and telepathic abilities, which Tregaren trained him to use.

Tregaren is an ex-Priest who had left the organization before its fall. He sought to continue the organization’s illegal genetic experimentations and cloning practices in his search for immortality. Mika’s mother was one of his first subjects, and Mika is actually his natural-born son.

Mika has been brainwashed by Tregaren, who can manipulate his thoughts and actions remotely. After they are released from the jail, Tregaren makes Mika lure Kali onto his ship, the Sepiantia, so that Tregaren can abduct her as his next test subject.

Realizing she’s been led into a trap, Kali arranges a counter-strike and tries to help Mika break free from his brainwashing programming.

Tregaren boards the Sepiantia with Darlia, his captive. The band members get caught in the middle of the resulting confrontation, and Luca, the band’s bass player, is killed.

Kali overpowers Tregaren’s mind-control and tricks him into following her into an airlock. She vents them both and uses her abilities to get back to the ship. Tregaren dies in the void.

As much as Mika hated Tregaren, he’s still conflicted over the loss of his father even as he’s wracked by guilt about his role in the women’s abductions. Darlia has been rescued, but there are other captives still out there, including Mika’s mother.

Kali is cleared for graduation, and her first assignment is to return to the field and go undercover as the band’s new bass player. Tregaren wasn’t working alone, and there’s a larger mystery to solve.
